Historical Context, Spectacular Views, Immersive Stories
Ludwig II reigned as King of Bavaria from 1864 to 1886. When he assumed the throne at 18 years of age, he was head of one of Germany’s most important families and monarch of the third most powerful state in the German Confederation. He died 22 years later, deposed and powerless, in debt and lonely.
My name is Stephen and I am your tour guide. On this tour, I will take you to Neuschwanstein Castle, where you will explore the interior of Ludwig’s most famous castle. Along the way to the castle gate, we have a walk of about 15 minutes. We’ll do that in about an hour, so we have some time along the way to stop and look at some fabulous views. And I’ll tell you some stories about the history of the region, about the local castles, and about the man they call the Swan King, the Fairy-Tale King, the Mad King—Ludwig II of Bavaria.
With these stories, I intend to provide you with some context to the interior castle tour. So, when you go inside, you’re not just looking at pretty things. I also try to stick to the facts as history records them. I’ll let you know if I think someone is making something up.
- We meet outside the Müller Hotel in Hohenschwangau village.
- From there, we walk 2 minutes to the bus stop, where we catch the shuttle up to Marie’s Bridge—that’s Marienbrücke, the best view of the year.
- After enjoying the view from the bridge, we take a beautiful walk along a winding path through verdant woodland.
- We see stunning views of the castles and the surrounding countryside, and we stop along the way to hear some stories.
- After the interior castle tour, we meet below the castle for another great look back at the gatehouse and across the Bavarian Plateau.
- There, I’ll share with you a few more stories, and we wrap things up with any remaining answers to your questions.
- Then, we walk a few minutes down to the carriage stop.
- Once you are comfortably aboard the horse-carriage, we say our goodbyes, and you ride along a wooded lane back down to the village, opposite the Müller Hotel
