Stephen Gets Honorable Mention in Writers of the Future Contest

Some of you read the nearly finished manuscript of “The Periwinkle Tides” in 2016 when I wrote it. Thank you for your feedback on that 2,000-word short story of Lovecraftian horror.

A Tentacled Creature Wakes

After its rejection from an anthology in 2017, I let the story sleep. I roused it recently to enter it in the 1st Quarter 2021 Writers of the Future contest. “The Periwinkle Tides” won an honorable mention.

You’ll have to search my name among 373 other honorable mentions, which are listed below the 99 silver honorable mentions, 9 semi-finalists, 5 finalists, and 3 placed winners.

One among so many makes the author wonder if it’s such a big deal. But the old hats in the industry say that Writers of the Future is the biggest deal for an as-yet-unpublished author. They assure me that an honorable mention in that contest means keep writing.

Confidence renewed, I am submitting the story to magazines.
